3.4. HTML 4.01 Strict vs. XHTML Basic

If you are free to choose between HTML and XHTML, then we need to find out which DTD is the right grammar for your web pages.

Even, if the HTML 4.01 Strict DTD contains a limited set of HTML elements and attributes in comparison to the HTML 4.01 Transitional DTD, it still contains a lot of elements and attributes which are not supported by all well known web browsers in mobile devices. Therefore, it could be an advantage for you to use only such a DTD that comprises only these elements supported by all browsers.

If you create your web pages with a web editor that allows to select the appropriate DTD then you should use a DTD that comprises only the elements supported. Otherwise, you need always to check or remember which elements and attributes are valid.
